Rolwaling Yeti Hunt Expedition

The mysterious Rolwaling valley lies a couple of miles south of the Tibetan frontier, along the east bank of Bhote Koshi. It is certainly one of the most remote and beautiful areas of Nepal. The area has brought repeated tales of the elusive Yeti, the abominable snowman. Eric Shipton the famous mountaineer in 1951 photographed the footprints of a Yeti on the menling glacier areas. Also Sir Edmund Hillary led a Yeti expedition in 1950 searching for this fabled snowman. We drive to Barabise and start our trekking and enter the Rolwaling Valley, the area is covered by vegetation and frequently long tailed grey langurs are seen.

After leaving behind Simigaon the trail ascends steeply to Sambar Danda to cross the foot of Mahalungur Himal and magnificent Gauri Shanker (7145m) is seen from this pass. The awesome peak resisted all mountaineering attempts until 1979. The west face was finally conquered by a joint Nepalese American Expedition. The only settlement on the upper Rolwaling is the small village of Bedding which resides an insignificant monastery where the fabled Tantric saint guru Padmacambhava is said to have meditated 2,000 years ago.
