Kanchanjunga
(The Glorious Trek)
Out of all the world's great peaks, Kanchanjunga, the 3rd
highest at 28,168ft. is the least known and least visited.
Astride the Nepal/Sikkim border, only a few miles from Tibet,
it lies in a sensitive area with restriction facing those
who approach it from any quarter. We have planned our tour
to avoid the restricted area as far as possible with the Yalung
glacier immediately to the south of Kanchanjunga, our main
objective.
Our trek takes us initially over Mahabharat lekh range with
a grand view of both the Everest and kanchanjunga massifs
divided by the deep. Arun valley, one of the few wildlife
which forces its way through Himalayan range. Intensely cultivated
hill sides dominate the landscape as we move north into Nepal
midlands, inhabited mainly by Rais and Limbus settlers. To
reach Simbua khola, we climb steadily through pine and rhododendron
forest the yak pasture below the flakier At 14,000 ft, 0ne
is almost surrounded by peaks Jannu (25,294ft) Kanchanjunga,
Kumbhakarna, Kabru and Ratong. The return route takes us west
through some delightful villages to the central region of
Taplejung. There is an easy walk down to the road head and
superb views of Everest, Makalu and Kanchanjunga
